Specialist Joinery & FF&E for a State-of-the-Art £500m Healthcare Transformation.
The BEACH Building (Births, Emergency care, And Critical care and Children's health) at Royal Bournemouth Hospital is a flagship 25,000m² clinical complex. As part of a wider £500m investment by the University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, this six-storey facility was designed to become the major emergency hospital for the Dorset region.
Medspace Solutions was appointed to deliver the comprehensive FF&E and Specialist Joinery package. Working in a high-pressure, "live" hospital environment, we supplied and installed over 1,000 rooms of clinical and bespoke furniture to support maternity, neonatal, children’s, and emergency services.
The Challenge: Scale and Compliance
The project was a massive undertaking, equivalent in size to 115 tennis courts. The requirements were twofold:
-
Compliant Healthcare Furniture: All cabinetry had to meet HTM63 and HTM71 standards to support the 4,400+ births expected annually and a high-volume Emergency Department (larger than the pre-existing Royal Bournemouth and Poole facilities combined).
-
Collaborative Design: With over 10,000 hours of clinician input going into the building’s design, Medspace Solutions had to ensure our joinery integrated perfectly with the workflows defined by the frontline NHS staff.
Our Solution
Medspace Solutions worked in close conjunction with Integrated Health Projects (IHP)—the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine—to ensure the internal fit-out matched the "first-class" standard of the building’s shell.
Bespoke Reception & Public-Facing Joinery
We designed and fitted the main reception counters and departmental hubs. These serve as the "face" of the new hospital entrance, engineered to be welcoming for families while providing the security and ergonomic heights required for 24/7 clinical staff.
HTM63 & HTM71 Compliance
HTM63 (Fitted Furniture): We supplied medical-grade cabinetry and worktops across the maternity and emergency wards, focused on seamless finishes for superior infection control.
HTM71 (Modular Storage): Implemented high-density storage solutions to allow for the rapid retrieval of life-saving equipment in the Critical Care and Emergency zones.
Custom Worktops & Specialty Joinery
In a building housing a 30-bed Critical Care unit and a new Neonatal Unit, durability was non-negotiable. Our worktops and custom joinery were manufactured to withstand the heavy-duty use of a major emergency hub while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.
The Impact
The BEACH Building officially welcomed its first patients in March 2025. By delivering this large-scale development on time and within the strict parameters of the healthcare framework, Medspace Solutions played a vital role in:
-
Supporting the transition of Royal Bournemouth into the primary emergency hospital for Dorset.
-
Creating a modern, efficient environment for 145,000 patients annually.
-
Helping IHP navigate a complex build through the challenges of hyperinflation and global supply chain disruptions to deliver a "world-class" result.
