HTM71

What is HTM71?

HTM 71 is a Health Technical Memorandum first published by the NHS in 1998. It is one of a series of documents that aim to standardise building components in health buildings and make them as efficient as possible

HTM71 focuses on Materials Management Modular Storage and sets out the principles and design of the system

HTM71 Modular storage

By standardising the size of the tray, all HTM71 capable systems can receive the tray. This could be cabinets, shelving or trolleys, for example.

The tray can also be split using dividers enabling may different storage configurations.

At the core of the HTM71 system is the ISO module storage insert (AKA the tray) measuring 600 x 400 mm.

There is also a half-size tray measuring 400 x 300mm. This tray is suitable for the WU455 wall units and the half-size range of floor standing units. Find our more about our range of trays and accessories.

Client Implications:

Trays can be quickly moved from cabinet to trolley and back enabling a more flexible storage and stock control method.

STANDARD HTM71 unit dimensions

Our floor-standing cabinets are available in three widths and a selection of heights. They can be supplied open-fronted (no door), a standard MFC door, Roller Shutters, Coloured MDF Laminate doors or Transparent plastic  doors. The doors are supplied lockable as standard but can be removed if needed. Find out more about doors here.

Each height of unit is available as 455mm wide (655mm deep) or 655mm wide (455mm deep)

Both types take the same 600 x 400 HTM71 tray. This allows the system to be designed making the most out of the space available.

There is also a half-size tray measuring 400 x 300mm. This tray is suitable for the WU455 wall units and the half-size range of floor standing units.

Find out more about our trays and plastics range here.

End & Infill Panels

End panels are used to complete a run of units.

Infill panels are used to fit a unit next to the wall

HTM71 WALL units

Wall units are also available as HTM71 -  WU455 and WU655

A half size tray (400 x 300mm)  can be used with the WU455 wall unit. Shelves can be used in the WU655 unit.

Sloping tops

To enable easy cleaning, Wall units and Full height units can be fitted with sloping tops.

HTM71 Mobile units

The units are also available in a mobile version fitted with braked castors.

The Base height and Mid height versions are completed with a 12mm Solid Surface worktop.

benefits of the htm71 system

  1. 1.
Reduced stock holding - Giving stock cost reductions and lower space requirements with consequent lower building costs.
  2. 2.
Item specific storage - Tailored storage giving more space effective storage, a more controlled and tidier environment and more economic use of space.
  3. 3.
Easily visible stock - Transparent containers allow quicker access and easier monitoring.
  4. 4.
More efficient stock rotation - Avoids product deterioration, obsolescence and waste.
  5. 5.
Unique stock locations - Fixed positions for each product makes for ease and speed of access with increased operational efficiency.
  6. 6.
Improved ergonomic design - Better health and safety features. Design of units reduces bending and stretching.

Analysis of benefits

Unlike traditional storage methods, i.e. filled cupboards and shelving, modular storage systems provide facilities which can be more precisely tailored to particular requirements and which allow easy visual location, more efficient stock rotation, reduced space requirements and greater flexibility.

In addition they generally provide more efficient and cost effective use of built volume. An NHS study* found that using a HTM71 system over a traditional system could provide the following benefits:

Reduction in floor space for a like-for-like (HTM63) system

23%

Reduction in cost for a like-for-like (HTM63) system

12%
